It is stressed that the following prices are a guide only. I can take no personal responsibility for their accuracy, although every effort has been made to ensure that information has been copied correctly. Updates will take place as often as I can find time to do them, but typically monthly.

Gold and Silver prices are found using http://goldprice.org and http://silverprice.org, while exchange rates are found using http://www.xe.com/ucc/.

Silver Coins

Estimated values on 5th January 2010

        silver/oz ($) £/$ £ per oz $/£
        17.61 0.62 11.00 1.6005

                pre 1920 post 1920
                wt/oz $ £ wt/oz $ £
halfcrown 0.4205 7.41 4.63 0.2273 4.00 2.50
florin 0.3364 5.92 3.70 0.1818 3.20 2.00
shilling 0.1682 2.96 1.85 0.0909 1.60 1.00
sixpence 0.0841 1.48 0.93 0.0454 0.80 0.50

The silver threepence is half the weight of a sixpence, but bear in mind that the percentage weight loss due to wear is higher (5 pounds face value of threepence is generally less heavy than the same face value of halfcrowns).
The crown and double florin are twice the weight of the halfcrown and florin respectively. However, these pre-1946 silver coins usually have a numismatic value in excess of their bullion value.

Gold Coins

Estimated values on 5th January 2010

        gold/oz ($) £ per oz
        1123.90 702.20
                wt $ £ +5% $ £
five pounds 1.177 1322.83 826.49 1388.97 867.81
double sov'n 0.471 529.13 330.60 555.59 347.13
sovereign 0.235 264.57 165.30 277.79 173.56
half sov'n 0.118 132.28 82.65 138.90 86.78

The +5% represents what I have been told is a typical markup for items sold by a bullion dealer

Help and Advice

I would be grateful if you could search the site carefully before mailing me - the answers to the great majority of the questions that I am asked can be found on this site, and I am unlikely to reply quickly to such questions. In particular, I do NOT provide a valuation service.

If you have done this and still wish to ask for advice, feel free to mail me via my Advice page but please do not send me unsolicited scans or other binary files.
